Húnaklúbburinn will be traveling to Spain this year to meet with a youth group to learn about gardening and culture. Although traveling produces much of the global emissions, here are a few tips in reducing your "footprint."
The largest part of your personal footprint is dominated by your transport; long haul flights and car and bus rides. Here’s how you can reduce the emissions:
Travel
Accommodations
The best thing is to stay with friends or relatives. But, if you are going someplace new, stay at hostels that try to reduce electricity usages. They help you to meet other travelers too. Take short showers, turn off the lights when you’re not using them, bring your own shampoo and soap, and reuse towels. This all helps reduce electricity usage thus reducing emissions
The largest part of your personal footprint is dominated by your transport; long haul flights and car and bus rides. Here’s how you can reduce the emissions:
Travel
- Pack light. Every kilo added to a plane or car makes them use more fuel. Packing light helps reduce carbon emissions. Check out this short video on how to pack light.
- Use buses, trains, and walk or use bikes whenever possible. The best way to experience a new place is by walking or biking!
- When you fly, you can offset some carbon emissions of your trip by starting an edible garden or by planting trees. See what the youth are doing in Húanklúb's Garden Project on our website!
- You can do simple things at home to decrees your carbon footprint. Go to NASA Climate Kids to learn more.
- Do you want to know what your carbon footprint is? Checkout these websites Carbon Footprint and WWF Footprint.
- Eat local! Eating local food helps reduce your carbon footprint because the food has to travel shorter distances. And, it is always made with LOVE.
- Reduce and reuse is the best in decreasing trash. Refill your water bottle at public places. Bring your own bag so you can skip the plastic bags.
