Progression of the Youth for Arctic Nature project

Read Now

We have been working hard on the Youth for Arctic Nature project this autumn! We are hoping to start testing bird monitoring with youth groups in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Svalbard, and possibly Greenland this spring.

Here is some of the material we have been developing recently. We would love some feedback on it.

We decided to create:

  • Species sheets to give youth
    • General information about the different arctic species we have shortlisted for the program
    • When they should be present in different arctic regions
    • If the species is rare or not in different arctic regions
For the species sheets, the bottom part describes the species abundance in different regions throughout the year. A yellow curve means the species is common. IS is Iceland, FO is Faroe Islands, SV is Svalbard, and EG is East Greenland, as these are the regions we are starting with.

  • Habitat sheets with the common species that frequent them so that youth can study the environment around them and decide which places they would like to monitor.

All of these are still drafts, but they are not going to change too much, especially the species sheets.

We are including here three species sheets, one habitat sheet, and the sheet containing the list of habitats.

Tell us what you think!

Crab drawing weekend

Read Now

On Saturday the 26th of September, Húnaklúbburinn members gathered for a crab drawing class.

First, we retrieved some crab traps from the peer. They had been left in the water overnight with bait, and were full, with twelve invasive Atlantic rock crabs and a confused sculpin inside!

This angry sculpin was directly and happily released

The day was successful, with some beautiful drawings. Since the crabs were invasive and should not be released in the wild, we cooked them with some thyme and salt and had them for dinner.
Although they are delicious, Atlantic rock crabs could be a big problem in Iceland as they are competing with endemic crabs for food. First observed in Hvalfjörður in 2006, this species has quickly spread all around Iceland.

Travel and Carbon Emissions

Read Now

Húnaklúbburinn will be traveling to Spain this year to meet with a youth group to learn about gardening and culture. Although traveling produces much of the global emissions, here are a few tips in reducing your "footprint."

The largest part of your personal footprint is dominated by your transport; long haul flights and car and bus rides. Here’s how you can reduce the emissions:

Travel

  • Pack light. Every kilo added to a plane or car makes them use more fuel. Packing light helps reduce carbon emissions. Check out this short video on how to pack light.
  • Use buses, trains, and walk or use bikes whenever possible. The best way to experience a new place is by walking or biking!
  • When you fly, you can offset some carbon emissions of your trip by starting an edible garden or by planting trees. See what the youth are doing in Húanklúb's Garden Project on our website!
  • You can do simple things at home to decrees your carbon footprint. Go to NASA Climate Kids to learn more.
  • Do you want to know what your carbon footprint is? Checkout these websites Carbon Footprint and WWF Footprint.
  • Eat local! Eating local food helps reduce your carbon footprint because the food has to travel shorter distances. And, it is always made with LOVE.
  • Reduce and reuse is the best in decreasing trash. Refill your water bottle at public places. Bring your own bag so you can skip the plastic bags.

Accommodations
The best thing is to stay with friends or relatives. But, if you are going someplace new, stay at hostels that try to reduce electricity usages. They help you to meet other travelers too. Take short showers, turn off the lights when you’re not using them, bring your own shampoo and soap, and reuse towels. This all helps reduce electricity usage thus reducing emissions

    Húnaklúbburinn

Húnaklúbburinn (Cubs Club) is a youth nature club, established in 2016 for the youth of Húnaþing vestra, with the purpose of connecting youth to nature by using a combination of environmental education and nature-based recreation.

The Cubs Club is founded on two philosophical concepts. Children have the right and responsibility in shaping their own futures and the futures of their communities; and children develop a genuine appreciation of the natural environment—and a sense of their own competence—through direct interaction with nature.

Cubs Club’s activities are designed holistically to help youth develop awareness of their role in environmental stewardship, while also learning about how their culture relates to the natural and cultural landscapes.

Join us in this building knowledge process in a fun and interactive environment and help us create a greener and better future.
