Leiðin að Rótunum / Back to the Roots

“How would you describe Húnaþing vestra to someone who has never been here before?”
Please send application in an email to jessica[hjá]holar.is

We have been working hard on the Youth for Arctic Nature project this autumn! We are hoping to start testing bird monitoring with youth groups in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Svalbard, and possibly Greenland this spring.
Here is some of the material we have been developing recently. We would love some feedback on it.
We decided to create:
All of these are still drafts, but they are not going to change too much, especially the species sheets.
We are including here three species sheets, one habitat sheet, and the sheet containing the list of habitats.
Tell us what you think!

- Species sheets to give youth

- If the species is rare or not in different arctic regions

On Saturday the 26th of September, Húnaklúbburinn members gathered for a crab drawing class.
First, we retrieved some crab traps from the peer. They had been left in the water overnight with bait, and were full, with twelve invasive Atlantic rock crabs and a confused sculpin inside!

Getting the crabs out of the traps
The day's catch and drawing subjects
Angry crabs. All of them were male.
This angry sculpin was directly and happily released
The day was successful, with some beautiful drawings. Since the crabs were invasive and should not be released in the wild, we cooked them with some thyme and salt and had them for dinner.
Although they are delicious, Atlantic rock crabs could be a big problem in Iceland as they are competing with endemic crabs for food. First observed in Hvalfjörður in 2006, this species has quickly spread all around Iceland.
