Progression of the Youth for Arctic Nature project

Read Now

We have been working hard on the Youth for Arctic Nature project this autumn! We are hoping to start testing bird monitoring with youth groups in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Svalbard, and possibly Greenland this spring.

Here is some of the material we have been developing recently. We would love some feedback on it.

We decided to create:

  • Species sheets to give youth
    • General information about the different arctic species we have shortlisted for the program
    • When they should be present in different arctic regions
    • If the species is rare or not in different arctic regions
For the species sheets, the bottom part describes the species abundance in different regions throughout the year. A yellow curve means the species is common. IS is Iceland, FO is Faroe Islands, SV is Svalbard, and EG is East Greenland, as these are the regions we are starting with.

  • Habitat sheets with the common species that frequent them so that youth can study the environment around them and decide which places they would like to monitor.

All of these are still drafts, but they are not going to change too much, especially the species sheets.

We are including here three species sheets, one habitat sheet, and the sheet containing the list of habitats.

Tell us what you think!

    Húnaklúbburinn

Húnaklúbburinn (Cubs Club) is a youth nature club, established in 2016 for the youth of Húnaþing vestra, with the purpose of connecting youth to nature by using a combination of environmental education and nature-based recreation.

The Cubs Club is founded on two philosophical concepts. Children have the right and responsibility in shaping their own futures and the futures of their communities; and children develop a genuine appreciation of the natural environment—and a sense of their own competence—through direct interaction with nature.

Cubs Club’s activities are designed holistically to help youth develop awareness of their role in environmental stewardship, while also learning about how their culture relates to the natural and cultural landscapes.

Join us in this building knowledge process in a fun and interactive environment and help us create a greener and better future.
